Susie Ekelund
To celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday 8 March, we put out an open call to women within the Company's membership, asking them to tell their stories, share what motivated them to join us, and fill us in on interesting facts about their lives, careers and aspirations. We were lucky to receive responses from a wide range of members, which we will be publishing in the lead up to International Women’s Day 2025.
Our fourth member interview is with Freeman Susie Ekelund.
Tell us about you and your career
After studying Jewellery Design & Silversmithing I took on a work placement at Alex Monroe Ltd… and never left! I’ve been with the company for 16 years now. We’ve very much grown and evolved together, my role has never stayed the same, it’s always reflected the needs of the business and my interests and skills. Now I’m the Head of Design and lead a team of 5 in the creation of all our new jewellery designs and bespoke commissions.
How did you first come to hear about the Goldsmiths’ Company?
Through Alex, who is a Liveryman. We decided to take on an Apprentice from The Goldsmiths Centre - I was their trainer. Being part of this process and seeing how brilliant and supportive the Centre is for young people in the trade opened my eyes to the work of the Company.
Why did you become a member of the Company?
I was inspired to join so I could be part of a community that supported good causes within the trade and throughout society. It’s important to me to try to represent and voice a woman’s perspective from my position in the trade. It’s been my experience to work with many, many brilliant young women and we should all try to have a voice in the room!
What are you involved in at the Company?
I’m part of the recently developed Advisory Panel and have also had the pleasure of being part of the mentoring programme.
How would you describe the Company in three words?
History, Leadership & Community.
What women have inspired / been important to you in your life and career, and why?
I’m constantly insured by the brilliant women I work with at Alex Monroe. We have such a fantastic community of talented women, all from different backgrounds and with various journeys through jewellery design and making - when we come together to create new work, it’s the combination of our varied skills and views that make the best jewellery.
What advice would for women who are interested in joining the Goldsmiths’ Company?
Don’t be afraid to get involved and use your voice. The more you give of your time or experience the richer the outcome for everyone.
